WHAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR COVER LETTER TO REALLY GRAB ATTENTION?

DO NOT repeat information that is in your resume!

If at all possible, address the letter to the Recruiter /Hiring Manager by name.

Use first paragraph to describe what position you are applying for, why you want to work for the specific company (it would be very good if you knew something about the company), and what makes you a good fit for this position. Try to write in interesting and unique way---get their attention. They review a lot of these letters—try to be professional yet memorable.

Use next paragraph(s) to highlight your background, skills and talents, that you offer. This needs to be with some details---what projects have you worked on and with what level of success? What responsibilities have you had; what skills have you acquired throughout your career that would apply for the role you are seeking? What broadly transferrable skills do you have---leadership, communication, team building, etc.? Don’t hesitate to include any awards you’ve received; and state the level of impact you’ve had in prior roles.

Closing paragraph, reiterate why you want to work for this company, why you are passionate about the company and/or the role; how you believe you can benefit the company.

Thank whoever they are for reviewing your cover letter and request that they advance your application and follow up with you.

Include letterhead that identifies how they can reach you---physical address as well as email and telephone number. They should NOT need to search for this information. Use all correct conventions for letter writing---Dear _____,

Sincerely,

Your name
